Capitol Reef and Canyonlands July 23

After we left Bryce, we headed for Capitol Reef. This park is nested in a canyon and has Native American carvings (petroglyphs) and a Mormon settlement. Upon arriving, we got some recommendations from Park Rangers and headed out a dirt road towards the Pioneer Register and the Tanks. Pioneer Register is the place in the canyon where early settlers would sign the canyon walls. The Tanks are big holes in the rocks filled with water so clear you could see little organisms swimming around. You couldn't see the bottom because the pools were so deep. We camped for the night in Dixie National Forest. In the morning we hiked to Hickman's Bridge, a natural arch, then did a creek hike. This creek had multiple little waterfalls, then a big one with a slide that Heidi slid down. After going to the Gifford House for ice cream and cherry pie, we headed for Canyonlands.

In Canyonlands we visited some viewpoints. We hiked up Upheaval Dome, a crater scientists believe it was either caused by a salt dome collapsing or a meteor. We also hiked up Whale Rock which is a rock... shaped like a whale (mind blown). The final hike of the day was a sunset hike. We went out a mile to Grand View Point and watched the sunset.

The high temperature of the day was 110°.
